Call for Papers: 3rd China Goes Global Conference

Call for Papers
3rd China Goes Global Conference
September 30 - October 2, 2009
Harvard UniversityCambridge, USA

Overview
This century has been dubbed the Chinese Century. But will the naming of this Century be congruent with the country’s performance in the global political economy? As part of a series of conferences on the topic China Goes Global, held at Harvard Kennedy School and Rollins College, we issue a new call for papers on the globalization of China and Chinese companies, focusing on the following broad questions:
  • 1. What are the social, political and economic influences of China’s globalization?
  • 2. How will China’s globalization effect the business environment of firms in developed and emerging countries?
  • 3. Will China really replace the US economic, political and business leadership in the 21st Century?
  • 4. What are the factors associated with China’s emerging global economic prowess?
  • 5. Can Western political/economic models and theories help explain China’s current trajectory, either on a macro or a micro level?

China’s present status in the world economy is already very impressive: The country is the world’s most populous nation, the world’s second largest economy (in GDP PPP) and third largest trader, and the largest recipient of foreign direct investment. China has 170 cities of over 1 million people, 600 million subscribers to wireless phone services, the largest on-line population, and buys over 12% of the world’s luxury goods. In addition, China has almost two trillion dollars in foreign reserves. On the other hand, China fast economic growth is unbalanced and, perhaps, unsustainable. Many Chinese companies are not profitable and near bankruptcy. The environment is in shambles and social pressures both from within and from outside are mounting. In that context, we welcome papers which discuss those topics below.
Some additional topics to be considered:

  • Outward Direct Investment (ODI) or Sovereign Wealth Funds of China and Chinese companies
  • Chinese global competitiveness and export performance
  • Forms of engagement with foreign firms used by internationalizing Chinese firms (e.g. partnerships, acquisitions, OEM, ODM, OBM, etc)
  • The impact of Chinese firms on the global political, environmental and business environment• New models for global enterprise with Chinese context
  • Corporate Governance, Ownership and role of State in Globalization of Chinese companies
  • Similarities and Differences between SOE and POE firm strategy and performance
  • Political transformation, institutional change, and globalization of China
  • Product safety, environmental and labor issues related to Globalization of Chinese companies
  • China’s policies towards acquisition of natural and strategic resources
  • Exchange Rate, foreign currency and the role of China in the global financial markets
  • China’s possible roles in a globalized world after the financial crisis
  • The impact of new information and communication technologies on the globalization of Chinese companies
  • China’s influence on standard setting in different industries and CSR of Chinese companies
  • Influence on worldwide mergers and acquisitions, networks and cross-country collaboration
  • General marketing strategies of Chinese companies internationalization, market entry modes and brand-building strategies
  • Country of origin effect of Chinese brands and China’s country image

Call for Papers: Innovation and Technology in Korea in International Perspective

International Conference
"Innovation and Technology in Korea in International Perspective”
in Vienna, 24 and 25 September 2009

South Korea has attained spectacular economic success in recent decades. It has reached the status of a Newly Advanced Economy, with challenges ever more mirroring those faced by other advanced economies. Such challenges include the necessary upgrading of the labour force, frictions of switching to a national system of innovation and creativeness adapted to R&D-leadership, and designing market-based economic policies that reflect the difficulties to foresee future technological developments. In this context, the consequences for the innovation system of socio-economic change, of socially and environmentally responsible development concepts and of policy-making in reaction to and beyond a period of financial and economic turmoil constitute further issues.

In the forthcoming conference, it is planned to analyse the parallel challenges for innovation and technology for the Republic of Korea and other advanced economies more thoroughly, i. e. to analyse the Korean case with an international, comparative perspective in mind. This comparison and international benchmarking will allow policymakers and scholars to better appreciate how much Korea has already moved into the circle of globally leading economies and what can be done to consolidate and to strengthen its position.

The conference will deepen the outcomes of a former conference (2007) on “R&D and Technology in Korea” and the subsequent book publication (Jörg Mahlich and Werner Pascha (eds.): Innovation and Technology in Korea. Challenges of a Newly Advanced Economy, Heidelberg and New York: Physica/Springer 2007). Subject to the quality of contributions, it is planned to publish the papers of the forthcoming conference as well.

Specific issues might include, among others:

  • Korea´s position in international comparisons of innovation and technology,
  • Impact of international trade, foreign direct and investment and licensing on Korea´s technology and innovation system,
  • Possible ramifications of the global financial and economic crisis on Korea´s innovation system,
  • Impact of global and regional institutions like OECD, APEC etc. on Korea´s technology and innovation system through peer processes, standardization, and regulation,
  • Sectoral patterns: Korea´s position to meet international challenges in strategic areas like electronics, biotechnology, environmental (“green”) industries, creative industries like film-making or electronic games, etc.,
  • Business challenges: Developing Korea´s technological competence through international joint ventures, M&A, strategic alliances, international human resource management, etc.
  • Bilateral and regional issues: competition and cooperation between Korea and Japan, Korea and the US, Korea and China, Korea and the EU, etc.
  • 21st century challenges: Effects of demographic changes in international comparison, resource and energy dependency, environmental concerns, North Korea as a challenge and opportunity for prioritising South Korea´s technological progress.

The conference will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 24 and 25 September 2009, at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

It is supported through a Modern Korea Grant of the Academy of Korean Studies under the Strategic Initiative for Korean Studies. Through this support, economy air fare to and from Vienna, three nights of accommodation, and a honorarium of 400 Euros upon receipt of the final manuscripts will be available for selected speakers.

One page abstracts are requested by 30 April, 2009, conference papers by 20 August 2009, final papers for publication by 31 December 2009. Please send your proposals by email to all of the organisers listed below.

Dr. Joerg Mahlich, Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, Vienna/Austria, joerg.mahlich@wko.at

Special issue
What is the state of HRM today in the emerging economies of CEE? What role does it play in the organizations in these economies? Who and to what degree is responsible for HRM performance and results on the ground?
If in the first part of the twentieth century the functions and responsibilities of HRM were relatively unambiguous and clear, in the twenty-first century the boundaries of HRM have become undetermined.
A big challenge for HRM is related to differences in the historical and political development of countries, globalization, and internationalization of companies.
And finally there is a challenge related to the reality of the current time period – downturn and radical changes in the labour market. What HRM policies and practices are efficient and help companies to survive or even to strengthen their competitive position?
So what is the reality of HRM nowadays?
A wide variety of topics are welcome:
§ .HRM in Central and Eastern Europe
§ .Strategic human resource management
§ .Recruitment and retention
§ .Human resource development
§ .Compensation and benefits management
§ .International human resource management
§ .Organizational change and human resource management
§ .Communication, participation and involvement
§ .Leadership and motivation
§ .Employees' attitudes and behaviours
§ .Industry/company case studies.

Entrepreneurship is the engine of economic growth in Canada. International surveys, such as the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), rank Canada as one of the most entrepreneurial countries (in terms of new start-ups) in the world. But most Canadian start- ups do not grow into successful, sustainable mid or large-size enterprises. In spite of tremendous investments in research and development, as well as an aggressive innovation policy agenda, Canada has not realized its true potential in commercializing innovation. Canadian innovation and technology tends to go abroad to be commercialized and Canada loses the benefits.
The Canadian Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress (at the University of Toronto) in all of their seven annual reports has called for increased productivity. “The $3,000 GDP gap with the US comes from innovation not just a lack of efficiency improvements”.
But we can do better and must do better, particularly during an economic crisis which is dramatically reducing opportunities for traditional employment and creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs. This year’s conference marks the 30th anniversary of the CCSBE. We have an ambitious agenda aimed at bringing together a range of stakeholders to grapple with these burning issues. Who should attend:
Academics - present your latest research and learn about other scholarly work in the academic stream and in workshops and panels combining practitioners, academics, policy makers and other experts.
Practitioners/Consultants – share your expertise and update your knowledge on the latest trends in supporting small business.
Policy makers – hear directly from a cross-sectored group of stakeholders committed to creating and growing enterprise in Canada. Learn more about their views on how to create an environment which supports innovation and entrepreneurship. Share your experiences about policies and programs that support innovation and entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs: learn more about the factors influencing success. Share your specific challenges with seasoned experts. Make suggestions directly to policy makers about ways in which your business success could be facilitated. We are offering you access to a wealth of resources including a series of focused, practical seminars presented by experts.
Papers, Panels, Workshops and Presentations
Academic Papers
This year the conference theme is “Commercialization of Innovation” and high quality papers are sought for a special stream on this theme. Dr. Rein Peterson, Professor Emeritus, York University, is chairing this stream. He will also edit a Special issue of the Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship, including the best papers on “Commercialization of Innovation”, that will be double-blind peer-reviewed. For more information on the special issue of the journal, contact Dr. Rein Peterson: rpeterson@ryerson.ca
In addition, empirical and theoretical contributions on other aspects of entrepreneurship are also encouraged. Specific themes may include:
  • Diversity: Women, Immigrant and Aboriginal Entrepreneurship
  • Entrepreneurship and Public Policy
  • Entrepreneurship and Economic Development
  • Technology entrepreneurship, technology-based new ventures
  • International Entrepreneurship
  • New venture creation and SME growth
  • Financing SMEs
  • Networking, Alliance and Outsourcing
  • Social Entrepreneurship
  • Entrepreneurship in the cultural/creative industries
  • Other topics

Proposals for panels should be submitted using the website submission system. For more information, contact papers.ccsbe@ryerson.ca

Call for Papers. Management Innovation: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead

Management Innovation: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead
Conference at Copenhagen Business School – 3-4 September 2009
Firms frequently renew their administrative systems, change organizational structure, experiment with reward systems, and configure organizational design in novel ways. Such changes of formal and informal ways of coordinating activities and motivating employees may amount to innovations, that is, ways of doing things that are new, as a minimum to the firm, but occasionally even to the world.

In spite of what would seem to be the obvious importance of management innovation to firms, industries and perhaps even whole economies, rather little research exists that is explicitly directed to management innovation. Only recently has the concept of management innovation been explicitly introduced in the management literature and treated as an important phenomenon in its own right.

This conference intends to further our understanding of management innovations. Therefore, the conference invites scholars from a variety of fields to elaborate upon theoretical and empirical issues that may be of relevance to the field of management innovation. Issues from the following, non-exhaustive, list of topics may be addressed:

• To what extent can we draw upon contributions from related fields of study, such as the change management, organization theory and innovation literatures, to better understand management innovation?
• What factors lead companies to adopt new management practices or organizational structures and what distinguishes innovators from imitators?
• To what extent should we be interested in environmental and external drivers vis-à-vis factors internal to the organization, such as top management teams, R&D expenditure, organizational design or culture?
• How may we theoretically and empirically link management innovation to firm performance?
• What are promising directions for future research on management innovation?

We encourage both conceptual and empirical contributions addressing these issues.

Confirmed key-note speakers for the conference include Professor Julian Birkinshaw (London Business School), Professor Edward Zajac (Kellogg School of Management), and Professor Richard Burton (Fuqua School of Business, Duke University).
